Swimming | Week 1 & 2

LI: to learn safety in water.

Last week and this week the Y8 group went to the YMCA pools in Panmure to learn safety skills in the water. We were split into 2 groups depending on how confident we are in water. To get into the pool safely we put both hands on one side and entered.

The different skills we learnt were;

Back Sculling - lay on our back, keep our heads above the water and move our hands thumb up thumb down in and out. (slightly kick underwater).

Forward Sculling - lay on our chest, keep our heads above the water and move our hands thumb up thumb down in and out. (slightly kick underwater).

Floating (facing up) - make a star fish facing up.

Floating (facing down) - make a star fish facing up.

Dolphin Diving - dive down, touch the floor of the pool with both hands and jump up.

Streamline - put our arms behind our ears and kick (with and without swimming board).

Swimming | Life Jackets

LI: To learn how to stay alive and float in life jackets.

This week was our final swimming session of the term. We had combined groups and wore life jackets. We have been learning about how we could stay alive in the deep sea with groups of people and/or alone.

We first had worn our life jackets and entered the pool safely. We first swam to the the end of the pool. Then we had got into small groups and made a chain with our life jackets. We had to hold someones life jacket where there shoulder is. The person at the end of the chain was helping make everybody move and the other end of the chain was the director who moved around to different places. This was to learn how to stick together in deep water.

Then we had got into small groups, we all huddled each other forming a circle. This helped with keeping everyone warm, if somebody was injured or old they'd go into the middle of the circle so everyone can keep the person old/injured warm and each other.

HELP
After that James had told us about HELP. HELP is not just a word it is also an acronym. HELP stands for:
Heat
Escape
Lessening
Position

Next we had to dive with our life jackets and touch the bottom of the pool. This was hard but if we put energy and strength into it we'd succeed. We had to dive down with our legs up towards the ceiling and our faces down. My idea was to dive like a mermaid. I had succeeded multiple times but in the start I was clueless.

Last but not least we've done something like pencil dives. We had to put our right hands across our chest to the other side of our life jackets and hold the back of our heads. Then we had to take one big step into the pool and drop.

Finally we all stood in a long line on the rail. Since it was the last day of swimming for the term we jumped off the rails and High Fived one of the swimming instructors.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport

LI:to progress on backstrokes and streamlines.

This week we had another swimming instructor, her name was Maddie. She was very nice and she desciplined us well with some rules.

We first done streamlines. We had to do streamlines from the platform and back two times. That was very tiring so next we had done kicking on our backs.

We had done kicking on our backs for only one lap to the platform and back. This was to keep our bodies warm and let us rest from the two laps of swimming.

RACE!!
Next we had got into groups of 3-4 to have a race. in our groups we compete against each other to see who gets in the finals. I had gotten into the finals for my group, and two other people. At the end 3 people competed in the finals, Me, Afatia and Makaili. We were all good swimmers but Makaili was very fast and so he won the race. We was titles the fastest swimmer of the week.

Swimming

LI: To learn how to swim without touching the ground and turning your head to breathe.

This week we had a new swimming instructor. Her name was Keryn. James is going to be our instructor next week. Keryn had some rules for us:

1. When we are on the platform we have to have our heads above the water.
2. Listen carefully
3. If you aren't trying your best than we need to do the swimming again.

We had first done streamlines to the platform and back. If we needed to breathe than we just turn our heads.

Then we had done armstrokes. We had to do armstrokes and if we need to breathe than we turn our head and we needed to kick our legs and if turning your head isn't helping with your breathing than you need to turn and kick on your backs.

Then we had done backstrokes. We had to do the same thing we had done for the armstrokes but we had to make our arm strokes straight.

Swimming

LI: To extend the duration of your swimming.

This week we had another swimming lesson with James. There was another person named Nick, he was a helper.

We first had done streamlines. We had to put our hands behind our ears and dive into the water and do streamlines. We had to do it back and fourth to the platforms. Than we had done streamlines and when we need a breath we turn on our backs.

We had to learn how to swim and not touch the ground.

Then we had been diving for toys in the water. We all had a toy to dive for. It was pool toys.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport

LI: to learn how to rescue people in the water.

This week we had been learning how to rescue drowning people. We had first found a partner. My partner was Sulia.

We had to learn how to rescue someone if they were drowning. When you are rescuing someone it is vital that you don't make any physical contact with them because you can risk your life too. So you need to throw something out for them to hold on and pull them to shore. You need to lie flat on the ground and throw them the object, the object has to be something that can float. If you stand up you might fall in the water.

Sulia had to pass me a noodle in the water and pull me out of the water. After that I had done the same for her.

Then we had been doing streamlines. For the streamlines we had to kick from one platform to another.

Then we had been doing duck divings. We had to duck dive for toys in the water. We had to throw them in the water and try to swim to them and get it than throw it again. It was super fun to do. We were throwing each others toys.

Than we had to hop out of the pool and get changed into our school uniform.

LI: To learn how to stay swimming in the water without drowing.
This week was week four for our swimming. We first down streamlines, to breath we turn on our backs. Then we were swimming on our back poking our stomaches out to float and kick. Then we had learnt how to do survival strokes. For the survival strokes we had to float on our back and tuck our legs in, open that up then kick them together. Then we done dolphin kicks and dolphin dives.

LI:To learn how to swim a long distance without drowning.

This week our swimming instructor was James. We first started off with Streamlines.

Streamlines:
For the streamlines we had to remember arms behind our ears and head facing down then push of and kick.

Kicking with the Board:
We had to kick with the board straight with our head up. Then next we had to hold the board infront of us and kick.

Swim with your stomach touching the ground:
We had to dive into the water and swim with our stomach touching the surface of the pool floor. If we needed air than we would swim back up.

CHALLENGE!
We had a challenge to see if we could swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping. I had successfuly accomplished it by sculling my whole way.

LI: To learn water safety skills.

This week was our first week of swimming fro the term and year. We had split ourselves into our year level. The seniors year level had went with the juniors. I was in the Year 6 group. We had went with the Year 1 group. We first split ourselves into least confident swimming in the deep pool and the most confident. We had two swimming instructors, Lizzy and Elizabeth. I was with Elizabeth.

We first were doing the floating. We had to float on our stomache than turn around on our back. We had tried this one by one. Than we had done another one. After we had done another floating activity but we had to lie facing down in the water the tuck our feet in and lie the opposite direction. This was hard at first but I had got it. Than we had done sommersaults from one end to the half way of the pool. Then we had done dolphin dives all the way to the half way of the pool. Then lastly we had high fived Elizabeth's  hand and exited the pool after doing our favorite swimming move. Mine was the sculling.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport | Kicking

Helen was our swimming instructor for Kiwi Sport. She made us do a challenge because it was our last time going to YMCA pools for Kiwi Sport because we had school holidays.

Our session was about kicking. We learnt how to kick our feet with long legs and small kicking to not make any big splashes we used boards.

Then we did a little bit of sequencing.
"What does sequencing mean?" - It means when you do things in a particular order.

We had to swim from one platform to another but we had to do in a certain way. We tried using different swimming skills. So first we had to do a mushroom float when we crunch up and tuck our legs in then we make a form of a T then get into your stream line position looking like a rocket then blast off swimming no arm strokes. Then we changed the sequence. We had to do a mushroom float, T form, Streamline then blast off doing 4 arm strokes and turn around, then float on your back sculling to the next platform. Then we had to try make our own sequence with 5 swimming skills.

Then we had another challenge. We had to see if we could swim one end to the 2nd platform without toching the ground. We had to partner up with someone to do that. I partnered up with sulia. Me and sulia ended up with a draw. Then we had to sit on the boards and scull to the other platform. I won that round. Then we all said thank you to helen and gave her a high five then went out pool safely and got changed back into our uniform.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport | YMCA

This week for swimming we had a different swimming instructor named Helen. When we had gotten in the water Helen asked us some questions about the things we have been talking about in the previous weeks we have been coming.

If you get caught in a rip you always need to go with the water and not fight it because it will make you drown and sink. If you are not a good swimmer then you can just float on your back and go with the water.

We did streamline swimming to the other platform and back. We had to put our hands up and put them behind our ears and just kick. We had to make our legs long and do small kicks.

Then we were doing sculling. We learnt how to scull when you are in a river. When you are in the river you put your feet first so if there is any rocks or something you can bounce off it. You have to put your legs together so that you don't hit anything.

Then we were treading the water. We had to use a noodle and tread with the noodle for 3 minutes and tread without the noodle for 1 minute. We had to try not to touch the ground. This was our challenge.

Then we did monkey swimming. We had to climb on the side of the pool moving sideways. Then we had got the rings and Helen will throw them in the water and two people will try get one of the two rings.

Swimming

LI: To learn how to swim using a boogieboard.

First we went to our swimming teacher. First we hag gotten a board each. We had to hold the bottom of the boogie board with two hands. We hold it like crabs with thumb on the bottom. We had to kick in the water with the boogie board with just our feet and no arms. After we did that we did that with arms. We had to put our heads under the water and stroke with the boogieboard and kick your feet. We did this back and forth to the platform and back. Then we had to do it with our swimming teacher making waves. We had to try get past. Then he taught us to make a shield with the board. We had to put it up and shield while trying to swim to the other side.

Then we were trying to thread. We had to all try one at a time. The aim was the get both of your feet going opposite circle directions and your hand movement going in the motion of sculling.

Then we all went into small pool and did a swirl in the water. We had to all hold hands and move around in a circle in the water then we all had to let go and float. We were floating in the water moving in the circle.

Swimming | Sculling

LI: To learn different techniques of swimming.

To get into the pool we had to do the safe entry.

First we did sculling on our back head first with a pool noodle. We took turns doing it from the platform and back. Then we did feet first sculling. It was alot harder than head first sculling. We had to scull fowards not backwards. It was very diffucult but our instructor Maryanne said that it was okay if we don't get it because you won't get it on the first try.

Next we had treading. We had to move both of our legs in big circles in a sitting position one hand doing the sculling motion and the other hand up.

Next we did diving. We did a seated dive. We had to bob and put our arms tucked behind our ears, and just go in the water from you position. We had to go deep in the water.

Then we did a safe jump into the pool. We had to bend our knees and jump in.

Swimming | YMCA

This week for swimming we learnt about how to use a life jacket in the water.

First we learnt how to do  the safe entry in water. So first you put one arm across yourself and hold you life jacket and get your other hand and hold your nose and cover your mouth with your hand. They do that so when you have a cold shock your heat in your torsoe doesn't spread everywhere in your body in the water and you hold your life jacket so you don't get stangled.

When you are cold and there is a bunch of you in the water you guys have to huddle up and put your arms underneath the person next to you under arm. You should also make a circle around people who are hurt in the water or cold. Other people who are cold go in the middle to stay warm.

When you are in deep sea and there is other people around you you guys need to make a chain if you want to stick together. You have to hold the other person in front of you shoulder and the other person hold the chain has to move around to try find somehwere safer.

When you are using a life jacket in the water then you should suggest to swim on your back then your front because it is easier and you could scull to safety.

When you are in the water and you need to get to safety immediatrly you shout HELP! And raise your hand up straight don't wiggle it. HELP stands for Heat escape lessoning position.

You should always puta life jacket on before you go in deep water or when a boat or soemthing on water is sinking so you can float and not drown.

LI: To learn how to save someone who is drowning.

This week we were talking about how to save lives in water and how to stay alive in the water. When someone is drowning you do not go up to them. If someone drowns you should not go up to them because they are panicked and when you try to get them they will jump on you and try to get air and will make you drown, if they are drowning you it is not there fault, they are panicked. The right thing you should do is get something like a stick, or a rope to pull them out. Some people can touch the floor and they think that they can't.

When you want to save someone in the pools get a noodle and pull them out but if you stand up then you would fall in the water. You need to lay on your front and pull them in. You could also use a rescue rope. When you throw it in you have to put your hand in the whole and stand on the rope so you cal pull the person in, you could also lie down on the rope and pull the person who is drowning in so it can be secure.

There is another way to float in very deep. You have you make the stance of sitting in the water and make your legs widen out by doing big circles in the water, and with one hand you do it like how you scull with your arms but with one arm, then you put your other hand straight up and shout "HELP!!, HELP!!". If you get too tired then lie on your back and put your hand up for a short time, and call for help.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport

LI: To learn how to scull in moving water.

This week the yr 5 students had there 4th session of swimming. James, Cameron and Kelly has been talking to us about ocean and river swimming safety. There are signals for where you are allowed to swim in the ocean. They are Red and Yellow flags. They are there so you know what length of swimming you can swim up to. There is also something that is Red and yellow. That is the lifeguards. If you have been told off by a lifeguard that is because they are concerned about your safety. Lifeguards are there to save lives in pools or beaches.

Next James was talking about rips. A rip is a patch of smooth water. they look like a safe place to swim in but they really aren't. If you swim in a rip in the beach it will pull you out to the ocean and you could drown. You shouldn't try to fight it because you are going to drown more and more and could possibly die. The good thing about the rip is the current. If you get caught if in one it make you move faster. When you move with the rip you have to swim diagonally to get to the edge and it will make it easier to get up and out. When you are in a river and you get caught in a rip you should flow with the current but you should also swim diagonally to the edge. The way you should swim is feet first and head up and scull facing the ceiling. The reason you should put your feet together is because if you hit into a rock with your legs open you could get stuck. If you put your feet together then you could bounce off the rocks.

When you are drowning you have to put your hand straight up and not move it so the lifeguards know to save you. If you wave one hand that means a Hi, if you wave two times that means "I'm having fun", if you put your hand straight up then that means a come and rescue me. When you put your hand straight up then you yell "HELP!!" as loud as you can until someone can hear you. They always say swim with an adult but there is more to that. The adult must know how to swim. If someone drowns you should not go up to them because they are panicked and when you try to get them they will jump on you and try to get air and will make you drown, if they are drowning you it is not there fault, they are panicked. The right thing you should do is get something like a stick, Log anything to pull them out.

After this we had got into our swimming session. First we went over sculling. Our instructor was Cameron. We learnt to scull feet first and normally sculling. You scull to survive in open water, moving water, also a river. So we had to first scull normally to the other platform and back. After that we had to scull feet first. We all had got the hang off it. After we all did our sculling then we had a race 2 people at a time then we thanked cameron and left the pools.

Swimming

LI: To learn how to swim.

This week LS1 had their third session in YMCA swimming centre. First before we had gotten into our swimming classes we first had a quick talk about Hyperthermia and Hypothermia. We talked about both of them. Hyperthermia is when you get very hot. Hypothermia is when you get very cold. Here is some signs of Hyperthermia and Hypothermia. You can get Hyperthermia when you stay in the sun too long and have no water that is when you can get it. You can get hypothermia when you are in cold water or in wet clothes also if it is a very cold season.
  • Signs of hypothermia: lips turn blue, teeth chattering, confused-could think that body is warming up/talking/walking funny.
  • Tell adult if suspect friend is hypothermic
  • Must warm body slowly, otherwise get shock ("sick"): dry, dry clothes, blanket, slow shower. Slow shower important to prevent shock to heart and death.
  • Always call ambulance even if you or the person is getting a bit better.

After that our sessions started. In my group Cameron our instructor. First we had a warm up. Our warm up was just doing our streamline pose and kicking your feet without moving your hands. After this we did streamline on our backs to the other platform.

Now we did Sculling. We had to learn this for when we go into open deep water. We did this by putting our arms out then in. You have to put your head up so you can breath. After that we did sculling when you go into moving water like a river. You first put your feet out and put yours hands out then in. We also had to put our heads above the water so we can swim.

Kiwi Sport | Swimming

LI: To learn how to swim. This week Rm 1 - LS1 went to YMCA pools. We had got straight into it. I went to my instructor. His name was Cameron. First we had to go over the safe entry in the pool. We went over safe entry in River, Deep water, and in the pool. After that we had to stand on the platform. We had to put our arms out like we are going to do a freestyle but we just float. We had to do that and kick ourselves off the platform. We used no arms. We just used our legs with our head under the water. This session was about floating. Next we did the exact same thing but with our hands on our sides and facing up. We also did drifting. We had to put our chest up so we can float/ drift. We also had to face the ceiling. We also did starfish. We had to form a starfish in the water and float.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport | YMCA

LI: To learn how to swim safely.
This week thursday year 3-6 students had to go have there Kiwi Sport at YMCA pools in Panmure. We first had a test to see which group you had to go in. There were 3 groups. One group at the end near the little kids swimming pool, then second group in the middle, the third group at the end near the spa. I was in the third group. For our test we had to freestyle swim, before that we learnt a safety entrance to the pool. After that we had got spilt into our groups. In my gorup we learnt how to kick facing upwards with no hands in the water. We also learnt a safety entrance for if you go in the deep water. You have to stand up near the edge, toes on the edge, then you make a big step foward and fall into the water, when you go into the water you bend your knees when you touch the groud and don't point your toes or it will hurt. After thatw e learnt a safe entry for going into the river, so like moving water. We had to slide into the water with you hands on the edge slowly and keep our hands on the edge because the river is moving you will go a different direction. Then we had to stand on the platform and put our hands at the back of our ears and swim just kicking our feet with no hands and our face in the water. Then we had to do twice. We did the same thing but facing upwards with no arms too. We did it twice. After that we had to leave so we high fived our instructor. His name was Camren.
