Maritime Museum Trip | Recount

LI: To create a recount about the trip to the maritime museum.

This week LS2 and Room 5 had the opportunity to go and explore the Maritime Museum. We went to invest more of our topic of inquiry this term, Explorers and Adventurers. We were put into groups of 5 with an adult as a supervisor. We experienced new and interesting things about back in the day exploration. Way before there were planes, cars or trains people travelled by ships and wakas. People had different ways of navigation. Instead of using google maps people used the environment, drawn maps, compasses and more. We had to create a recount of the day.

Collaborative Explanation | Plastic Pollution

How do you feel knowing that each year, over 1 million sea animals lose their lives from plastic waste? This is caused by the laziness of people who can't be bothered to throw their rubbish in the bin. When you litter, your rubbish leads to landfills, drains, and possibly to the ocean.

Everyday approximately 8 million pieces of trash lead to the ocean. As the waste leads to the ocean it can attract the sea animals by mistaking it for food. The sea creatures can die by being suffocated from the plastic and can also be caught in the plastic. The plastic makes them have digestive problems and can cause them to die.

According to National Geographic, by 2050 there will be 12 billion metric tonnes of plastic landfills. Right now there might be 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic in our ocean right now.  Chlorinated plastic can release harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then leak into groundwater or other surrounding water sources. This can cause a range of potentially harmful effects on the species that drink the water.

Marine animals' lives are at risk due to the plastic pollution in the sea, if we don’t take action now who knows what will happen next.

LI: to make a collaborative explanation about plastic pollution
In groups of five we created a collaborative explanation. This explanation was about Plastic pollution. What we did to get information was watch a video from love your coast. This video showed the love your coast community picking up rubbish.

Tech Session | Mrs Ferguson | Robotics

LI: To learn about algorithms.

Today we had our first ever tech session. We were working with Mrs Ferguson, who taught us about algorithms and robotics. She was our first rotation of the year. We used a google drawing to write down examples of algorithms. Algorithms are not just numbers, they are also instructions.

Kiwi Sport Reflection | Cricket

LI: To learn how to play Cricket.

Today we started our first Kiwi Sport session of the year. This term the sport we are doing is cricket. Our coach's name is Brian, he is from Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club. We split into two teams. My team started with Bowling.

Bowling:

In this section we learnt how to bowl/throw. We started off with getting into 3 groups of 4-5. There were a Tennis Ball, Wicket and 4 cones for each group. We had to use the tennis ball to throw at the 4 cones. To do that we had to aim by using the opposite hand your throwing with. Once we hit one of the 4 cones we need to put it on one of the wicket stands. Whichever team does all 4 cones win. My team won for this section. Our next challenge was to hit the wicket. If we hit the wicket we need to pull a pole out. If you have no more poles you win.

Batting:

After the bowling session we moved on to Batting. For batting there were 4 people batting and the rest fielders. There were a line of blue cones for where the fielders can stand. The fielders job is to get the ball that the batter bats and run as fast as they can to put it back on the stand. While the fielders are doing that the batters run back and forth as fast as they can. They try to get as much runs as possible.
