Polynesian Navigators | Past and Present

LI: To find out what gourds are used for.

This week for inquiry we are learning about Polynesian navigators. And find out what Polynesian navigators use gourds for. Gourds are a type of pumpkin and are fond in the US or mexico, Polynesian navigators used them to store rain water, they hollowed out the the gourd and they washed it, when they went on long voyages they would usually use a gourd to collect rain water and to keep it a cool they keep it in a wooden cage and dragged it around with them when the voyaged. To keep the gourd closed the cut of the top and used a string to keep it closed.

in the present day people use gourds for jewelry, Furniture, dishes, utensils, and decoration. People cut out a piece of the gourd and shape it then the they carve designs into the gourd and they then fill it in with something that is colorful and attach it to a string to create a necklace.

And we used our smart searching skills to find all the information we know now about gourds. we used key words or phrases to help find this information and we also used select or reject we had to choose the most important information to get a better under standing of the learning.
