Map of the World | Te Reo

 LI: To create a world map and name the different countries chosen by Whaia Ode in Maori. 

This week for Maori we were looking at 12 different countries around the world. We created a map and sorted out the different countries to where they belong. Here was the list of countries;

Kanata - Canada

Hapani - Japan

Ruhia - Russia

Mehiko - Mexico

Amerika - America

Haina - China

Awherika ki te Tonga - South America

 Inia - India

Ahitereiria - Australia 

Aotearoa - New Zealand

Parahi - Brazil

Aaketina - Argentina

We first found out the english names of the countries than used Google Maps to help us find out where they belong on the map. As you can see, I created a DLO with my map and sorted out each country where they belong. 

Te Reo Maori

LI: To identify the different countries of Britain and South America in Maori.

This week for Maori, Whaia Ode came in and taught us the different countries of South America and Britain. We worked individually in this activity. In south america I learnt that another way to say Argentina in Maori is Aaketina. Learning this was very interesting because it helped me build my Maori Language. 

History | Maori Language Week

 LI: To identify the history of Maori Language Week.

This week me and my group have completed another Te Wiki o te reo maori challenge. For this challenge Juel, Sulia, Heavenly and I created a google slide deck explaining the importance and history of Maori language Week. In 1975, Maori Language week was marked an official language week in Aotearoa ( New Zealand ). Although there was a language week, the people from the Maori community protested to have Maori language taught in schools to keep the culture going. This was acknowledged in the 1980s. In 1985 Maori Language was one of the official languages of NZ. 

Whakatauki | Maori Language Week

LI:  To define a whakatauki in your own words. 

Sulia, Juel, Heavenly and I have completed our 2nd activity. For this activity we created a DLO explaining what we thought the whakatauki meant in our words. The whakatauki we chose was 'Long on words, short on actions'. In my opinion I thought this meaning that people keep saying things but doesn't actually accomplish or complete it. A whakatauki is a significant saying or proverb. 

Te Reo / English APP | Maori Language Week

 LI: To create a bilingual app of Maori and English. 

This week is Maori Language Week. In LS2 we were given different challenges to accomplish relating to Te reo maori. This is one of 3 challenges. For this activity Juel, Sulia, Heavenly and I created a interactive DLO, also known as a digital app. In this DLO we included different questions relating to Maori. This DLO was made to help others learn some words, numbers, places, and object names in Maori. There are different buttons on the DLO that are there in order to click and move around the DLO more easily. 

Family Tree | Te reo Maori

 LI: to create a DLO showing your family roots. 

This week the Te reo Maori challenge was to create a DLO showing yoru family roots. In this DLO I have made a family tree of my family. I have only went up to one generation of my family. As you can see there are words like ; Whaea, Matua, Whaea Keke, Matua Keke. This was a really fun challenge. These words are for showing who they are. Here is the definition of the words:

Whaea - Mother

Matua - Father

Whaea Keke - Aunty

Matua Keke - Uncle

Maori Weather

L.I To learn how to say weathers in Maori.

Liletina and I worked fantastically on this task. We have learned a lot. The one thing we learned the most was saying Maori weather phrases. For this task we translated Maori to English so the reader's can understand how to say the word in Maori. Liletina and I have worked together and finished it together so we can understand how to say Maori weather words.

Days of the week | Maori

LI: To understand and say the maori names of the week.

This week for maori we have been doing days of the week in maori. Using a google doc we sorted out the names in maori that are assimilation names and traditional names. (e.g) if the english name for wednesday is wednesday that the assimilation name would be wenerei, if it were the traditional name it would be "Raapa". The assimiliation names are the names that sound like the word.

Karaka | Time in Maori

LI: To understand the time in maori.

This week for maori we have been learning how to say and understand the time and numbers in maori. Using a clock generator we had gotten images that showed the time so we could understand it. (e.g) if the time in maori said "Hawhe pahi te rima karaka te taima" it would it it was half past five, or 5:30. If the time said "whitu karaka te taima" it would mean it was seven o'clock or shown as, 7:00.

Maori | Wiki Ono

LI: to learn how to control a poi and learn how to understand something related to location.
This week in Maori, we learned how to use a poi. A poi is a Maori object that is used to increase flexibility and strength. It is also used as an instrument. The activity that we had done was translate different types of words that describe location. for example: Roto and in English it would mean inside.

LI: to learn about Te Reo Maori.

This Week in Te reo we had learnt of different ways to greet whanau(Family). For the First activity, we had to watch two videos. In those videos they showed people talking to each other in Maori. The next thing that we had to do was write down the English sentences for the Maori sentences. For the next activity we had to do the same thing but it had to do with a family, for example: 'Ko wai te papa Lisa? The main words that would help us with it was  kuia(Grandmother/old lady), koro(Grandpa/old man), mama(mom), papa(dad)

LI: to learn how to pronounce maori words.
This week was our first session for moari of the term, we had learnt how to pronounce and understand maori words.In our groups we had to search maori words and find images that relate to the word. If it was the same word, we would have to find the multiple meanings. Thenw e had done another doc that related to the Maori gods and we had to sort out what type of gods they were. 

He Pai Ki Ahau

LI: To make a DLO with what you like.

This week for Maori we had been doing He pai ki ahau ( What we like) in Maori. We had to create a DLO with different things that we like. The things I like is;

Mochi -  There is no word in Maori for Mochi.

Cake -  The way to say cake in maori is Keke.

Netball - Netball in maori is Netipaoro.

Touch Rugby - The way to say Touch Rugby in Maori is Pa Whutupaoro.

Seasons - Tau | Maori

LI: To learn the seasons in maori and what they are.
The word for seasons in maori is Tau. Spring,Summer,Winter, and Autumn also have their own names. We used the Te Ara website to learn the word and the maori dictionary.

Te Reo - Raapa | Maori

This week for Maori we had read a book called " The legend of Mauao". After we had read the story we had made a google doc. On one side we had moari and english words, for example on one side it has "Ko wai koe?" and then on the other side it had to answer.

Maori | Te Reo Maori

LI: To use your reacearching skills to try an find meanings of Maori language.

We use google maps and maori dictionary to find out what the maori names for the towns or cities in aucklad mean. We had to use them to see where that city is and the english name to the maori name. Also where they are like the north and south island of NZ.

Maori | Words

LI: To find out new maori words and try to pronounce it.
This week for maori Whaia ode told us to make a dlo based on maori words. We had to do maori words that whaia ode chose for us and put it on the dlo. We had to get into pairs. My partner was Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn and I looked up on the moari dictionary the see how to pronounce words. We had to also add images to what the moari word is based on.

Paikea | Maori

This week for Te Reo Maori we were talking about Paikea. Paikea is a man who drowned in the sea and a whale that had got sent from the gods saved him and brought him to Aotearoa (NZ). Paikea had 3 wives making him have a lot of children creating Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tahu.

Te Huarere

LI: to find out different meanings and search up different places.

This week for Maori we were talking about the weather and different places in NZ and meanings of Maori word. We were talking about Te Huahere (Weather). We had to find pictures about what the waether was like on the week days.
