History | Maori Language Week

LI: To identify the history of Maori Language Week.

This week me and my group have completed another Te Wiki o te reo maori challenge. For this challenge Juel, Sulia, Heavenly and I created a google slide deck explaining the importance and history of Maori language Week. In 1975, Maori Language week was marked an official language week in Aotearoa ( New Zealand ). Although there was a language week, the people from the Maori community protested to have Maori language taught in schools to keep the culture going. This was acknowledged in the 1980s. In 1985 Maori Language was one of the official languages of NZ.

    1. Hi Sakshi!
Thank you for taking time to comment on my blog post today. In my opinion the most interesting fact I found was just finding out the the Maori language wasn't always an official language in NZ despite the fact that they are one of the founders. What was your most interesting fact you found?

  2. Hi Fau,
It was really nice of you to reply. That fact is really interesting. I didn't really know much on this topic so I found everything new. I found interesting that earlier the students didn't learn maori in schools. I always thought that it is a native language and almost every person in Aotearoa knows who to speak it. What facts did you know earlier about this topic?

    1. Hi Sakshi,
Even though you are new to Aotearoa you must've found lots! I also thought Maori language was something that was always included in subjects in school and around NZ. Before I learnt about the history of the Maori Language week, I never really knew much about it. I learnt more and more as I found out.  How about you? Did you know anything before learning about Maori Language Week?
