 LI: to consider both perspectives.  

 

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a DLO to explain the evidence and perspective of a maori story. We read about Sacred Spots from Māori Mythology. We used the different evidence from the articles to create an opinion on whether we think it is true or false. 

The story we chose to do was about the Tongariro National Park. This story talked about the mountains that surrounded Taupo lake, they were all male except for one. Her name was Pihanga. They fought for the love of Pihanga, only one came out victorious. That mountain was Tongariro. 

Main Idea

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text. 

Storytellers communicate through words. They weave the important points together so we as listeners can use these spoken words to create images of the knowledge they are sharing in our own minds. Written stories often do this for you through the power of illustration. In groups select one of the myths and legends from the playlist below and use your negotiation skills to identify the main ideas.

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a DLO explaining the main ideas of the story of how maui slowed the sun. We watched a video explaining the story of how maui slowed the sun and why.

Venn Diagram

LI: to find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of “The Beginning”.

 

 To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a Venn Diagram. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between the Video and Written Version of the Maori Creation Story. A Venn Diagram is a diagram showcasing the differences and similarities between two different things.

Summary

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about

 

For our Inquiry we were learning about Matariki, and the origin story. Our task was to watch a video on the Maori Creation story and we had to summarise the video. Storytelling is a huge part of the culture and history of Aotearoa. This taonga from our ancestors is the heartbeat that will keep our whakapapa alive for those who are still to walk in their footsteps. The video was an artist representing and creating the story through sand art. 

 Our 20 important words had to be the top important words from the video, words that represented the story. Then from the 20 we had to pick the 6 most important words Then using those 6 words we had to sum up the story in a few sentences.

Te Reo Maori Challenge | Matariki

LI: To create a DLO showing the 7 stars and what they are.

This week there was another Maori challenge. For this challenge the theme was on Matariki. I created a DLO showing the matariki stars and what they are. Matariki is a cluster of stars also known as the 7 sisters. Some people in NZ celebrate matariki as a time of new growth and a Maori New Year. The 7 stars are named, Waiti, Waita, Waipuna Rangi,  Uruarangi, Tupuarangi, Tupuanuku, and Matariki.  

Te Reo Maori Challenge | Kowhaiwhai Patterns

LI: To design a kowhaiwhai pattern for our PBS Te Reo Blog.

A kowhaiwhai pattern is a traditional pattern from the maori culture. Kowhaiwhai patterns represent stories or tales from the past. 

The meaning of my kowhaiwhai pattern is showing how you can succeed and move forward in the future. The red and white colors reflect the positive and negative things in life.

LI: To learn how to say numbers in maori.

This week for maori we have been continuing with numbers. We learnt how to say and understand numbers in maori. e.g Mano is thousand, and miriona is million. In partners we could make our own numbers and write it down on a google doc.

LI: to learn the language behind Maori.
This week in Maori we have been learning the language of Maori. Today we have Focused on the word Goodbye and why we ask people Where do you come from. Saying 'Where you come from'. For Maori people it is really important to ask that question because it creates a link with that person. We also learnt about why Maori's use Macrons. Macrons are the line on top of the letter.

LI: to learn basic words in Te Reo Maori

This week for Maori we had to get back into our group from last week and we had to sit down with Whaia Ode, she told us new words and we learnt how to say how many younger, older brother or sisters we have in Maori. We also had to say the numbers of siblings we have. We then had a task to complete we had to find places in new Zealand and other countries and we had to find the Maori name for it so we had to translate the English name into Maori.

Nga Whetu

LI: To count the stars.

This week for moari we had created a DLO about Nga Whetu ( Counting Stars) or about Huarere (weather).  We had an option to either pick Nga Whetu or Huarere. I chose Nga Whetu. I had to create a DLO based on counting stars in Moari for the juniors in our school. We had read two stories based the weather and the stars.

When you see a star twinkling/shining very bright it means there is going to be a frost or it is trying to tell you something.

Rehua is the god of summer in NZ. He was very lonely until he found two women. His first wife makes the crops and plants grow beautifully in one half of the summer than his other wife is a bit mean making the other half of summmer with crops dying and dry ground.

Maori | Space

LI: To identify how space was made in moari beliefs. 

This week for Maori we had watched a short clip about how the stars, sun, moon are in the sky in some moari tribes beliefs. It was about one tribe that believes in another story of how Papatuanuku and Rangi were separated. When they were separtated there was nothing but darkness. One of the son's made children one was named Te Ra, Te Marama and more. Tane Mahuta took them into the sky make the land much more lighter. 

Patupaiarehe | Ihenga | Te Reo Maori

LI: To learn about Patupaiarehe fairies and the geography of Aotearoa.

Patupaiarehe are fairies that live in mountains. they have magic powers like super strength and changing people into patupaiarehe. The patupaiarehe we learnt about lived on Mokoia Island. We learnt about Patupaiarehe and fairies by listening to the story of Ihenga and searching for information, and using Google Maps.

Te Huarere

LI: to find out different meanings and search up different places.

This week for Maori we were talking about the weather and different places in NZ and meanings of Maori word. We were talking about Te Huahere (Weather). We had to find pictures about what the waether was like on the week days.

Maori | Remember that November | Parihaka | Taranaki

This week for Maori Whaia Ode read us a book called Remember that November. It was about Guy Fawkes and how he died. Guys fawkes was man that him and other people planned to kill the king because the rules weren't fair. This was on November the 5th. 


Then we used google mapes to search up Parihaka and Taranaki.

Maori - String game - Whai - Cat's cradle

This week for maori we played a maori game called whai and Cat's cradle. We learnt hiw to make different things with the string like, Parachute, Tea Cup and saucer, Eifel tower, and the diomands. The diomands are very hard but we all managed. We had been taught by Whaia Ode and learning from other people who know how to do it.We all learnt how to either one of those with the strings.  Here is an image of me doing the 2 diomands.

Te Reo Maori - How to weave

LI: To learn how to weave a paper Fish
LI: To research in information on google maps.
This week for maori Whaia Ode read us a book about the Wellington harbour. It was about 2 taniwhas, one taniwha was board and wanted to go somewhere other than the river they lived in, but his other friend said no that where they lived is their home. So the other taniwha swam off to try find a place to go to the sea. There is alot more information in the book. After that We had to go on our chrome books and search up Petone, Te awa kai rangi, Somes Is., and whanganui a tara. After that we had to go on youtube and search how to weave paper fish. Maori

Today for Moari We had Mrs Odie come into LS1 to teach us about martariki and the martariki song. Mrs Odie tought us a martariki song after that we talked about the southern cross and how to find it. We also talked little about the martariki stars. After that Mrs odie gave us a piece of paper full of moari words but it was a word find sheet that we had solve. When we finished we had show her then write the song on the bored to the back of sheet of paper. After that we had to watch a video Video/Video.

Matariki Maori

Today for maori we were talking about Matariki. We watched different videos about matariki, They were A matariki Story, Matariki, and the matariki story from Toni Rolleston - Cummings, The story of matariki.  Those were the video we watched. We had to do some reasearch about matariki. Then We watched a video called Maori Poi Dance - Melville Intermediate School, Whaia Ode made us watch it so she could teach the boys how to use the sticks. When we watched the videos about maatariki we larnt something. This is one of the stories. Long ago their was nothing but darkness, Ranginui the god of the sky and Papatuanuku Mother earth had children all was good til they were growing up, they wanted more space and more room that one day one of their sons were pushing them apart it was Tane Mahuta, the parent woke up but they were separated already. Ranginui the god of the sky was full of sadness so he cried making rain, but someone was sad too it was their son the god of the wind Tawhiri he felt sad for his parents, so he cried tears of lightning, he got his tears and threw it up to the heavens and they became stars and those starrs were called the stars of matariki. 

Maori - Kei Te Pehea Koe?

For maori we had been given a sheet of paper and we had to draw on it. We had to answer the questions that are Kei Te Pai, Kei te makariri, Kei te Wera, kei te riri. We had to find out the meaning and draw on the faces of how you will react for example Kei te riri, we would have to draw a person who is angry. Kei te pai is a person who is happy, kei te wera is a person  who is hot like sweating and last kei te makariri which is a person who is freezing cold. 

Maori Pepeha

LI: To Make a pepeha about yourself. I learnt some words in maori I couldn't understand and some I could. Whaia Ode explained to us what the words meant from english to maori. We had to make a pepeha about ourselves talking about where we live, what our name is,our family, our school, and last our favourite sports. We added photos, for my parents I didn't have a picture of them so I only did the rest.
