Zoo Trip!

LI: To invest more about animals.

On Thursday the 20th of June, LS1, rm 5 and rm 4 went on an amazing trip to the Auckland Zoo. We had split into different groups for the trip. My group went with Hoihope, our host for the day. He first took us to see the animal from Africa, the Servals. Each animal in the zoo have a Behavioural Enrichment activity in their area. The behavioural enrichment is something helping the animals train to progress their ability.

Servals:
We had gone to see the servals. Servals are carnivores, which mean they eat meat. Hoihope had told us that Serval are one of the best jumpers, they can jump up to 3m high. Servals have their own type of species. Servals look like baby cheetahs because of the fur pattern. Servals have very long ears to hear things when they are near. Serval cats can live up to 10-15 years of age in the wild but in captivity (the zoo) they can live a bit longer. Servals B.E is a tall bar that they put the servals food on and the servals jump up to try to get the food. Next we visited the cheetahs.

Cheetahs:
Cheetahs are carnivores as well as the servals. We had found out that the cheetahs are the fastest land mammals. In Africa people hunt cheetahs for their fur to show off, that is not good. Cheetahs can run up to 100km a minute. A cheetahs claws are used for a good grip when they run just like rugby boots. Cheetahs can run 100km but soon get tired after 30s. Cheetahs are unretracted mammals. Unretracted mammals are mammals that do not retract their claws. The zoo keeper's used to walk the cheetahs around but there is a new rule for now contact with the animals. We had felt cheetah fur bought from the confiscated items of the airport. A cheetahs tail is what helps with the balance and the direction of the cheetah while chasing its prey. Hoihope let us touch a cheetah's fur. After we visited the Elephants.

Elephants:
We visited 2 elephants named Burma and Anjalee. All elephants are herbivores, which means that they eat plants, fruits, hay and vegetables. Burma is from Burma and Anjalee is from Sri Lanka. The elephants B.E is learning to paint with their trunks and learning to work with their trunks to get something they want. People hunt down elephants for their tusks. An elephant’s trunk is prehensile. An elephants poop is made into different things like paper because elephants just eat fruit, hay, and vegetables unlike the carnivores. Hoihope let us touch Burma's painting she did 6 years ago. Then we went to the area of south Africa and saw some flamingos.

Flamingos:
Some Flamingo come from South Africa, others come from all around the world. Flamingos eat with a strainer in their beaks. Flamingos eat small insects and more. Then we next visited the Rhino and Niyala.

Rhino and Niyala:
The last place Hoihope had taken us was to the rhino and niyala. People hunt down rhinos for their horns to show off like the cheetah fur. Rhino horns are made out of keratin, which is just the same as hair and fingernails but put together.

Then with the time we had left we had visited different animals. My favourite animals were the spider monkey and the golden tamarin monkey because they both looked so small and cute. Then we all hopped on to the bus and left. I had an awesome time with the different animals, I hope I go back there again someday.
