Character Profile | Erza Scarlet

LI: To create a character profile.

Our challenge was to choose our favourite anime/manga character. Our next challenge was to draw the character on our chromebooks or on paper. I chose to draw my character digitally because I am not very skilled with drawing on paper. It took me a while to trace my character as there was many details for me to add. Our final challenge was to write a paragraph that describes our character and explains why this character is your favourite. My character, Erza Scarlet. The reason to why Erza is one of my favorite anime characters is due to her overwhelming leadership abilities. She is a very straight-forward person and sticks to her morals. I also admire her as she is the strongest female mage in the Fairy Tail guild.

History of Manga

LI: To read for meaning and understanding

Our challenge last week was to complete a reading comprehension about the history of Manga to show that we are reading for meaning and understanding. Our final challenge in this activity was to create a DLO to share the information we found out. 'Manga' is the term originally made in Japan that defines 'comics'. They are used to tell stories or explain an event. There are no limits to what manga can be about, the genres can range from fantasy worlds, to horror gore stories.

Manga Artist

LI: To read for meaning and understanding

Last week, our challenge was to use our smart searching skills to create a DLO in our own words that tells us about the life of our favourite manga artist or a well known manga artist. The manga artist I chose was Io Sakisaka. She is one of my favourite manga artists as her 3 popular shoujo romances are some of my favourite romance manga's. I enjoy reading shoujo romance and Io Sakisaka has given the best impression on me. She started her manga career in 1999 when she made her first anthology story.

Tuesday Maths Challenge | Distance Learning

LI: to use the most sufficient strategy to solve your problem.

Today I completed the second maths challenge of the week, today's question was 'There are 54 students in LS2. If everyone shook hands with each other how many handshakes would there be altogether?' . For this question I would use multiplication. So, 53 x 27. 53 times a student is handshaking every other students hand then multiply that by half the number of students (27). The answer I got was 1431. I used the place value method to check if my answer was correct.

List Poem | Distance Learning

LI: To write a list poem that describes a topic by painting a picture with your words.

My culture is the red and white flag that hangs proudly in the Kingdom of Tonga
It is the fresh mango picked off a tree to make an otai
The ta'ovala worn to show respect
It is the oil that drips down her skin as one performs a  tau'olunga
The lea faka tonga spoken by my ancestors
It is the hymns sung on sunday mornings,
The 15 minute prayers that seem to be 9 hours along with it.
My culture is, Tongan

List poems are a simple way to get into poetry writing that can be based on ideas that are familiar to you. Lists can be an inventory of items, people, places, or ideas. List poems don’t require rhyme and often involve repetition. My list poem was based on "My culture is...". In this poem I expressed what it means to be apart of the tongan culture.

I enjoyed writing this poem because I could truly express what my culture is.

Letter Q | Distance Learning

LI: To evaluate.

This week we read about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) to identify words that begin with the Letter Q. Once we had done that we identified the words we didin’t know and defined these. If you would like to see my DLO explaining 3 words starting with the letter Q click the text box that says "Link to canva".

I found out the word 'qibla' is a direction which muslims pray towards.
I enjoyed this activity because I learnt so many words that I never even used or knew before.

Monday Maths Challenge | Distance Learning

LI: use the most efficient strategy to solve your problem.

For these maths challenges I used addition and subtraction with written algorithm. For the challenge and super challenge I used written algorithm in addition and for the extra challenge I used written algorithm in subtraction. These questions were based off of past news of ‘Dutch couple move into world’s first 3D printed home’. In the news there was an elderly couple that retired from being shop keepers that moved into the worlds first 3D printed home . Their comment on the house was - “It is beautiful,” “It has the feel of a bunker – it feels safe,”.

Hauora

During the Olympics many athletes should bring a positive mindset while competing.  It is vital to balance your mental and physical well-being as this builds up on your 4 walls (hauora). As an olympian athlete it’s important to enjoy and celebrate the success you earn but it is equally as important to embrace the less successful times. The more you fail the more motivation and humbleness you receive, failure gives you the opportunity to strive ahead and think of the positive things.  It is having a belief in yourself and the support of your whanau that keeps you motivated.

Swimming | Week 1 & 2

LI: to learn safety in water.

Last week and this week the Y8 group went to the YMCA pools in Panmure to learn safety skills in the water. We were split into 2 groups depending on how confident we are in water. To get into the pool safely we put both hands on one side and entered.

The different skills we learnt were;

Back Sculling - lay on our back, keep our heads above the water and move our hands thumb up thumb down in and out. (slightly kick underwater).

Forward Sculling - lay on our chest, keep our heads above the water and move our hands thumb up thumb down in and out. (slightly kick underwater).

Floating (facing up) - make a star fish facing up.

Floating (facing down) - make a star fish facing up.

Dolphin Diving - dive down, touch the floor of the pool with both hands and jump up.

Streamline - put our arms behind our ears and kick (with and without swimming board).

PB4L

LI: To identify the different concepts we need to be prepared in school.

This week’s PB4L (positive behaviour 4 learning) activity was to create and understand the things we need to be prepared for school. Heavenly, Micah, and I have created a DLO listing all the things we need to be prepared for school. Some of the main things we need are a charged device (chromebook), proper school uniform, tidy hair, and remembering to bring PE gear to school for any fitness activities or sports training.

Coding with Python

LI : To use and understand the connection between the writen code, the block code and the flow chart.

This is the comparison between the python coding, the blocks and the flowchart for making the microbit act like a dice.

Mindfulness Reflection

LI: to understand the definition of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is relaxing your body, and having a calm mindset. Mindfulness discriminates against all the negative emotions going throughout your mind. This makes us more engaged in our learning and the things we are doing.

Today we had a session in LS2 about mindfulness. To relax our minds and bodies we took a few minutes to breathe in and out. This helped us clear our heads and clear our thoughts. It is treated as a taonga ( with a level of respect ).

Olympic Maths Challenge 3

LI: to use the most efficient strategies to find answers.

Olympic Maths Challenge

LI: to use the most efficient strategies to find answers.

Here is my second Olympic Maths Challenge. For this activity I created a DLO explaining my strategy and answers to the solution. I also created a screencastify video for a more depth explanation about my strategy. This question was based off an olympian star swimmer Michael Phelps. There were 2 questions:

How many metres did Michael swim for his gold medals?
If Michael swam 2m each stroke, how many strokes did Michael take in total?

The most efficient strategy for me for this question was addition and simple division.

Superfingers Challenge

LI: to recall our time tables quickly.

Our focus for this activity was based around recalling our time tables fast. The objective of the game was to remember our time tables and say them quick. To play this game, we pick a word and roll two dice that go up to 12. After doing so, we look at the dice and multiply the numbers. If one of the dice roll on 6 and the other on 3, we go 6x3 and say the answer (18) as fast as we can. The person who gets the answer correct fastest, erases one letter from the word. In the end, if you answer the equations and have no letters left, you are announced the winner.

First, we chose a partner to challenge. Whoever won out of the pair gets to challenge another person who won from their pair. The person who won that goes onto the quarter finals, then the semi-finals and then the finals. The person who won the finals is the winner and fastest person to recall their time tables. Afatia won the finals against Chris. I enjoyed this activity a lot because it was fun and also got us to recall our time tables faster.

Violet Walrond Y Chart (Inference)

L.I to make inferences about the events in the text using clues provided by the author.

Our focus this week in Reading was about Violet Walrond.

Violet Walrond was the first female new zealand representatives in the swimming industry. She played in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics at the age of 15 years of age and was the youngest competitor. She was also one of the firsts in New Zealand to ever use the crawl technique, which had grew a lot of attention around NZ. Violet started winning competitions at a the age of 12 years old, and her father was also her coach; as he did get gifted the Royal Humane Society award, for saving 11 people from drowning.

In this activity we were required to complete this Y chart, that concluded me looking at a image and inferring from a question. The question that was asked was “What will happen when time unfreezes”. Sulia and I worked collaboratively together to complete this task. For us to get a better understanding of the context, we were acquired to read a passage about Violet Walronds life.

We really enjoyed this activity because we learnt apart of NZ history.

Flow charts and Radio chats

LI: to understand how flowcharts relate to coding blocks

LI: to understand how to get the microbit to talk to another microbit using radio signals

Here is my flowchart practise document.

Flowchart Practise

The next activity today was coding the microbit to send a radio signal to another microbit. We had to make sure that both microbits were on the same group number so we didn't accidentally get a message from another group.

Medal Tally

LI: to use the most efficient strategies to find answers.

This week Vayan, Lukah, Bella and I have created a DLO explaining our strategy and answers for a certain maths problem. The maths problem that we have chosen was based off of the olympic medal totals for each country. Using information from 2 different charts of Medal statistics we found out the current top 10. I have made a screencastify video explaining my strategy.

Should host countries have to spend so much money on building the Olympic venues?

LI: To use provocation to understand both sides of a story.

Our focus this week for reading was based on the Olympics & provocation. We used provocation to understand both side of the question asked. The question was should host countries spend so much money on building the Olympic venues? Our opinion was that host countries should not spend a massive amount of money on the olympics, since the former buildings used to host the olympics. We think that the billions of dollars used to other countries are facing difficult times. I found this task interesting because seeing both side of the story meant different people see the story with different opinion.

3 Matariki Birds

LI: Name, draw and describe 3 birds that are part of the Matariki harvest.

Matariki was celebrated at the end of the harvest season.  It was a time when the pātaka kai (storage house) was full of food. There was kūmara, kererū and fish such as moki and korokoro. During the celebration, there were big Hākari (feasts).

In the DLO above, Lukah, Chris, Taua and I made a presentation about 3 birds that are eaten as apart of the harvesting during the matariki season. The three birds we found information about was the Tui, Kaka, and Kereru. Using our smart re-searching skills we found different pieces of information about each of the birds, fun fact; Early European colonists called tui the parson bird or mockingbird; however, these names are no longer used. We each digitally drew our 3 different birds. We also talked about how the 3 birds were caught to eat during the matariki season.

Matariki Stars

LI: To strengthen our connections to Matariki.

This DLO was desgined to understand the Matariki Stars celebration that's going on this week. We completed this by working collaborativtely together and understanding what, why, who and the matariki stars are. We also started being creative and drawing our own stars. By creating this DLO we used our searching skills and looked through websites to find facts and information about the Matariki stars. Matariki takes place eahc year when the cluster of the stars knowen as Matariki. The new year is a time of new beginnings and is a time to embrace the trandtions. To strengthen our connections to Matariki we had a choice of research activities. I enjoyed this activty as I learnt more information about the Maori Cultures.

Coding in Python

LI: To Learn how to code the Microbot in the Phyton.

For this example for coding the buttons , the main thing to notice is the "def" which is defining what the on_button_pressed will make to microbit do. Again this has a top and bottom so the content has to go inside it.

The first one shows the Phyton coding for flashing heart. It flashes between a small heart icon and a large heart Icon. The main thing to notice between the Phython coding and the blocks is the the forever loop is the top and bottom of the content in both.

Liberty

LI: To write an abstract noun sentence.

An abstract noun is something that can’t be physically touched, as in a feeling (happiness, fear, love, etc) also the 5 senses. This week, LS2 have been learning about Metaphors and Nouns. We got into pairs and were introduced  on what is nouns , what we see in the poem ( the structure) and the 5 senses. In our pairs we created our own poem about an abstract noun of our choice. The abstract noun me and my partner chose was 'Liberty'. Liberty means freedom or freewill.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Flowchart

LI: To learn how to code the micro bit to play rock, paper, scissors and understand how the flowchart matches the code.

Link to DLO

  1. When I shake the micro bit it will choose a random number between 1 and 3.
  2. I make a variable called 'hand' and set this to the random number.
  3. If the number is 1 - the micro bit will show the symbol for paper.
  4. If the number is 2 - the micro bit will show the symbol for rock.
  5. If the number is 3 - the micro bit will show the symbol for scissors.
This week for technology we have been creating flowcharts explaining our coding on makeblock. This week we have been learning how to code a rock, paper, scissors game. There is a DLO showing my flowchart and a video of my rock paper scissors.

Division Rounding

LI: to solve addition problems with hundredths by changing one number into a whole number.

This week for maths we have been learning about rounding decimal numbers. To use decimal rounding, you should subtract from a decimal to round it and whatever has been subtracted should be added to the other decimal number. That will make it easier to add or subtract those numbers.

Bella and I created a DLO to explain our understanding on decimal rounding. We used the question 8.45 + 2.03. In the DLO we explained our strategy and thinking.

Jealousy

LI: To write an abstract noun sentence.

An abstract noun is something that can’t be physically touched, as in a feeling (happiness, fear, love, etc) also the 5 senses. This week, LS2 have been learning about Metaphors and Nouns. We got into groups and were introduced  on what is nouns , what we see in the poem ( the structure) and the 5 senses. Our group created a Metaphor about happiness; Happiness is the blooming rainbow that shines when the sun comes out after the rain. A Metaphor is a comparison of two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’. We created our own poem as a group about Jealousy.

ML Forming and Opinion

 LI: to consider both perspectives.

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a DLO to explain the evidence and perspective of a maori story. We read about Sacred Spots from Māori Mythology. We used the different evidence from the articles to create an opinion on whether we think it is true or false.

The story we chose to do was about the Tongariro National Park. This story talked about the mountains that surrounded Taupo lake, they were all male except for one. Her name was Pihanga. They fought for the love of Pihanga, only one came out victorious. That mountain was Tongariro.

Main Idea

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text.

Storytellers communicate through words. They weave the important points together so we as listeners can use these spoken words to create images of the knowledge they are sharing in our own minds. Written stories often do this for you through the power of illustration. In groups select one of the myths and legends from the playlist below and use your negotiation skills to identify the main ideas.

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a DLO explaining the main ideas of the story of how maui slowed the sun. We watched a video explaining the story of how maui slowed the sun and why.

Venn Diagram

LI: to find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of “The Beginning”.

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a Venn Diagram. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between the Video and Written Version of the Maori Creation Story. A Venn Diagram is a diagram showcasing the differences and similarities between two different things.

Summary

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about

For our Inquiry we were learning about Matariki, and the origin story. Our task was to watch a video on the Maori Creation story and we had to summarise the video. Storytelling is a huge part of the culture and history of Aotearoa. This taonga from our ancestors is the heartbeat that will keep our whakapapa alive for those who are still to walk in their footsteps. The video was an artist representing and creating the story through sand art.

Our 20 important words had to be the top important words from the video, words that represented the story. Then from the 20 we had to pick the 6 most important words Then using those 6 words we had to sum up the story in a few sentences.

Flowcharts & Dice

LI: To learn how to use flowcharts to plan coding.

Our focus this week in Tech is to learn how to use flowcharts during planning coding. A flowchart shows the steps of a problem as boxes of various kinds, and their order is shown by connecting the boxes with arrows. In this DLO shown below, we have practiced creating a flow chart based on rolling dice.

In this activity we used micro-bits to roll these dices. The flowcharts were based on these micro-bits activities.

Brochure | Reading

LI: To create a brochure advertising a truthful visit at Afghanistan.

Our reading focus was around Afghanistan and creating informed opinions on a text or informative article. The text we explored was focused around attracting tourists despite the recent dangers and attacks that have been occurring in Afghanistan.

Our creative task was to construct  an informative brochure that could persuade foreigners to visit Bamyan, Afghanistan on an escorted tour.

We read through the article and shared our thoughts using information that we knew about the topical issue. We used different reading comprehension strategies to understand the text in a more clear and direct way. We used questions to help us understand the text better, skimming and scanning to evaluate the text even more and summarising in order to retell the text with our own form of comprehension.

I found this task fairly easy because I am familiar with creating persuasive brochures that advertise an area, and I was able to use my prior understanding of a text to make and share my formed opinions with others.

Screw | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines.
We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. A screw or another word for nail is a round sharp point metal pin that screws things in.

Wedge | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines. We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. A wedge is a simple machine that is used to push things apart.

Lever | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines.

We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. The lever consists of 3 main parts, Effort, Load and Pivot. Depending on how heavy the object is, the lever would go up (side where the lightest object is) or down (side where the heaviest object is.

Attitude | CARE award

LI: Create a video explaining why having a positive attitude is important.

Today I created this video with Fau, Hosea and Aisea. It is based on "Why having a positive attitude is important". Having a positive attitude is important because it sets a good mood for everyone and yourself. Fau, Hosea, Aisea and myself tried to figure out some ideas of "why having a positive attitude is imporant" and we thought why not ask eachother for our own opinions on that. As we shared our idea's, Fau (our fastest typer) typed it on a Google Doc for us to practise. It took us about five tries to make our video but we still managed to get it done in no time. I personally liked this challenge because it was funny to see all our bloopers and because anyone who watches this video will now understand the whole purpose of this.

Inclined Planes | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines.

We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. The incline plane is a simple machine used as an mechanical advantage to move things upwards

Wheel and Axle | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines.

We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. The Wheel and axle are used to move something along the floor by cutting down friction.

Pulleys | Simple Machines

LI: To find the information for simple machines.

We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines. There are 6 simple machines. They are, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, pulley, lever, and an inclined plane. Our challenge was to create labelled diagrams. Using the information and facts we found we created a 25 word summary for each simple machine. Pulleys help you to move the load or change direction of the forces.

Following Classroom Rules & Expectations | PB4L

LI: To follow the rules and expectations, expected from teachers.

This weeks PB4L learning is about following classroom rules and expectations. PB4L is a acronym describing Positive Behavior for Learning. PB4L helps us understand the correct behavior for inside classroom learning and outer learning. This consist of Classroom discussions, walking to assembly, behaviour on school trips, wet day procedure eg. respecting wet day monitors. All of these prospects will help us develop a strong and healthy learning enviroment.

Book Week

LI: to celebrate reading.

Panmure Bridge School had been celebrating book week this week. Everybody was encouraged to wear a costume or outfit of a book character of their choice. It was also samoan language week, our assembly was presented in english and samoan. It was great too see the many students and juniors who participated in book week and wore an outfit. I love how creative some people were! We also had Mr Goodin and Mrs White tell us their favorite stories. Some people also wore traditional samoan clothes as it is Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

I personally loved book week, the children of the junior school had been given the opportunity to showcase their favorite characters.

Student Led Conference

LI: to share our learning with our families.

Last night we had our annual Student Led Conference of the year. This student led conference gave the students of Panmure Bridge school the opportunity to share their digital learning. Students bought their families to take a look in their classrooms and look at their work. In LS2 we all worked up to put as much of our work on the walls to show our families. For those who were coming, they had to book a time when they wanted to come and take a look at the classrooms. We made scripts beforehand so when we come to show our parents around the class, we will be fully prepared.

I really enjoyed showcasing my learning to my family and showing them the hard work I have done throughout the year.

Being a Jedi in Coding

L.I: To code the robot to move backwards without touching it - to be a jedi

Star Wars: The Mandalorian - Baby Yoda Explained - Den of Geek

My robot will wait until i have pressed the onboard button before it does anything. We used an "IF - THEN - ELSE" block as this gives the robot two choices of things to do. We are using the ULTRASONIC  SENSORon the of the robot and we need to sense if something 10cm in front of it. IF something is 10cm or LESS in front of the robot , it will move backwards. IF something is NOT less han 10cm in the front of the robot, it wil move forwards (ELSE). This is all put into a forever block so that the robot constantly senses what is in front of it.

Test and Evaluate | Inquiry

LI: To use technological practices process to design a toy.

For Mrs Fisi’iahi’s Inquiry lesson, we were focusing on the three last technological processes. They were: build, test and evaluate. We used the required materials in order to build the AUV rover. After this, we tested and compared each group’s rover to see which group was able to scramble across the floor the furthest. Evaluating our results was the last step.

I found this activity very fun because we have been given the chance to create our designs and make tests and evaluations. The results are in the DLO.

Hidden Cost Challenge | Maths

LI: To make smart choices with money

This week Kruse, Kingston and I worked together to solve this ASB 'Hidden Cost Challenge'. We created a DLO to show our thinking on how we got the answers. In this activity there were 4 questions we needed to solve, we used the scenario of a girl named Emily who wanted to do some online shopping but she had a budget of $250. We had to solve the different prices and options Emily should've chosen to save money and use money within her budget. For this activity the most efficient strategy we used was addition.

ASB getwise | Money clever

LI: to make wise choices with money.

Today we had Marlon come from ASB bank to explain to us how we should be smart with our money. We played a little activity to help us understand why it is important to use money wisely and how to use money wisely. In this activity we had to imagine that we were going on a trip to Fiji. In groups of 4-5 we all had $1800 each to spend. As a group we were known as one person.

Our first decision was the Passport fee. We had two options whether we wanted to pay now for $200 or later for an unknown price (higher amount). We all chose the first option, which would leave us with $1600 cash. We then decided how much we wanted to pay for our flight, we could either choose the economy flight for $500 (low rate service, no comfortable seatings etc) +2 points of enjoyment or the first class flight for $800. We chose the economy flight, which left us with $1100. Next we were looking at the Accomodation. There were 2 options, a 5 star resort by the Ocean + $100 paying for all food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), or, a budget hotel with bad service for $200. We chose the 5 star resort for $500 with $100 bonus to pay off all food services. Next we were deciding whether or not we should pay for travel insurance for $300. We chose to get insurance because you never know what could happen and how much the expenses would be. Lastly we were looking at the prices for the activities. We chose the $200 activity for snorkelling.

Next we found out that we had been food poisoned so we were rushed to the hospital. The fee was $2000, but since we had insurance, the insurance would pay us off.

In this session we learnt that we should spend our money wisely and be clever with how we are using it.

Financial Capabilities | Maths

LI: To plan a night out that fits within the given budget of $45.00

A budget is a plan for managing money. Budgets can be made for an individual person, a family, a business, a government or a country – they can be made for anything or anyone that makes and spends money!

For maths this week we have been continuing with Financial Capabilities. Independently we wrote down our answers in our maths books. For this activity there was a budget of $45. The smith family went on a trip to the Musuem. There are 2 adults and 3 children in the Smith Family. We calculated the different options and prices the Smith Family would've spent with their $45. On the DLO above, Me, Farzana, Juel, Tyson and Micah created a DLO explaining our answers.

ATV Challenge | Inquiry

LI: To strengthen connections to technology.

We have been learning about technological practice.  This week we have been learning about the 6 processes of Technological Design and how each one is important in the process of designing a product.
We are using the processes of technological practices to  design and build a rubber band- powered rover that can scramble across the floor.

Map of the World | Te Reo

LI: To create a world map and name the different countries chosen by Whaia Ode in Maori.

This week for Maori we were looking at 12 different countries around the world. We created a map and sorted out the different countries to where they belong. Here was the list of countries;
Kanata - Canada
Hapani - Japan
Ruhia - Russia
Mehiko - Mexico
Amerika - America
Haina - China
Awherika ki te Tonga - South America
 Inia - India
Ahitereiria - Australia
Aotearoa - New Zealand
Parahi - Brazil
Aaketina - Argentina

We first found out the english names of the countries than used Google Maps to help us find out where they belong on the map. As you can see, I created a DLO with my map and sorted out each country where they belong.

Provocation | Polynesian Panthers

LI: to evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation.

A provocation is a purposeful action meant to bring out lawful or political topics with the desired caused to make someone angry or upset in mental, physical or emotional form. In short, a provocation is an action taken with desire to cause others to have strong feelings about a topic or issue. However, our DLO was not created for the purpose of making others angry but to share our opinion on the events of the 1970s, respectfully.

In 1970, the New Zealand government sent armed police officers and dog squads to the homes of Polynesian people. They had batons and megaphones and would brutally force people without a current work visa out of their own houses and deport them back to their country of birth.

In response, a group called the “Polynesian Panthers” were formed. The Polynesian Panthers were a group of university students protesting against the Dawn Raids and the rights for Social Injustice. ‘Power to the oppressed’. The authorities who were meant to keep New Zealand a safe place had permission to abuse their power in order to kick Pasifikan’s out of their homes.

With this in mind, we think that our Government today (Labour) does not need to apologize for the actions of the past Government (National) not only because they are separate parties but also because Jacinda Ardern and her party is not at fault for the racist actions taken by National. However, we think that the current leader of National (Judith Collins) and the National Party members of today should be the one to issue an apology on behalf of those responsible for these events.

This is because she is the head of National which is the party who were the cause of the Dawn Raids and deportation of polynesian people. However, they do need to issue an apology publicly as it can potentially fix the open wounds that remain today. The apology should be proposed by the correct party members as a sign of empathy and remorse.

Financial Capabilities | Maths

LI: to understand a budget is a plan for managing money.

Today for maths we have been talking about Financial Capabilities and using number knowledge to purchase things within a certain budget. We had 5 different questions we needed to complete. Having a budget in money makes you think more about what you need and what you don't. It makes us think about how we can smartly spend our money and not waste it on useless things.

Te Reo Maori

LI: To identify the different countries of Britain and South America in Maori.

This week for Maori, Whaia Ode came in and taught us the different countries of South America and Britain. We worked individually in this activity. In south america I learnt that another way to say Argentina in Maori is Aaketina. Learning this was very interesting because it helped me build my Maori Language.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times.  Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts.

I found the words that Marc said very inspiring and interesting because it isn't everyday you hear a story of one's life and how it drastically changed. His story was very awesome and can also make others believe that they can change their life with the saying "there are only CANs not CAN'Ts".

Kokako Infographic

LI: To create an infographic using google draw that tells your audience facts about the kokako.

This week, everyone in LS2 has been given a set of different challenges based on our camp. For this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information about the North Island Kokako bird. We worked in pairs/groups. In my group there were Me, Taua and Hosea. We used 3 different sites to find information about the Kokako Bird. One of the things I found interesting about the Kokako bird was that Kokako birds do not have a specific diet like some other animals, depending on the time of the year they eat different things. Another interesting fact I found was that even though the Kokako is a bird and many people take birds as good flyers, the Kokako bird is not really a good flyer and is has more mobility.

This activity was enjoyable because I got to find our new things about the Kokako Bird.

Key Competencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them.

I found this activity interesting and fun because I am comparing the things I challenged myself to do at camp and depending whether I have done them or not.

5 minutes of Camp

LI:  To recount a 5 minute snapshot of one experience you had at camp

Me against the heights of the beam

I had so many thoughts in my mind, I wondered what it would feel like if I was at the end of that ladder. I wasn’t really a fan of heights but I always challenged myself to overcome  it.  Despite all the dismay going through my head a rush of confidence wavered around me, I can do this!

The wind slightly hit the surface of my face as my feet left the ground. Before I even noticed I was already at the end of the ladder. I took a deep breath, I encouraged myself to go further. Slow and easily I climbed up the staples of the pole. I drew closer and closer to the desired target.

Finally, my feet were on the log. “Turn around!” they said as I was trembling with fear. The fear of falling off the beam. I grabbed a hold of the rope that was connected to me, each step I took I tightened my grip. Tears were forming in my eyes, I can’t cry just yet! I was breathing rapidly as my heart pounded. My face felt as hot as a boiling kettle! Please- I was so close to bursting out in tears, but I held it in and kept going.

All of a sudden I found myself at the end of the log. I was proud! I hugged the pole tightly before I turned around and walked to the middle of the log. The support team below me encouraged me to do a little dance. A dance! What the-! Do they want me to die! I mustered up the courage to let go of the rope for a little while. I waved my hands around for a bit then gripped the rope right after.

Phew! Finally it's time to go down. “Slowly crouch like you're going to sit down, straighten your legs then push off” the instructor said. Following those steps I came down successfully. As I came down I burst into laughter, mocking myself how scared I was. I was relieved, this experience was none like others before.

Last week we had our annual school camp held at Kokako Lodge. My 5 minute snapshot shows my personal voice and I have tried hard to paint a picture with my words to describe what I was doing and how I felt. In this recount I have showcased my feelings towards one of the activities during camp, as you can see I am potraying how I felt on the High Beam activity.

This activity was really fun! Mainly because I was able to express my personal feelings and experience through learning.

AFL | P.E

LI: To learn how the sport AFL works.

This week LS2 had another session of AFL. We were just learning the aspects of AFL, there were; tackling, passing, and kicking. Each action had their own names. The tutors that we had this week were, Andrea and Rebecca. As you may know this week we were just focusing on the main aspects of AFL and how it runs. Next week we would be playing the actual game AFL using the skills we learnt in the sessions.
