Food Technology | Mrs Heka | TC

LI: To learn how to use a knife properly and safely.

Today was our first tech session at Tamaki College this term, our new tech teachers name is Mrs Heka. Mrs Heka is apart of the food department of technology. Today the yr 7s made colorful fruit jars/cups. During the session we learnt how to use a knife properly while cutting your fruits. We also talked about hygiene and why we have to be hygenic.

Making the fruit jars:
We were split into groups of three, one person was assigned to wash the dishes and the other two were making the food. We first got out our measuring spoons and measuring cups. We had gotten one bowl of fruit for each group. In the bowl there were Kiwis, Oranges, and Grapes. Mrs Heka showed us how to cut the fruits properly.

Cutting an orange: To cut an orange you cut both the ends and lay the orange up flat. Then you cut the sides of the orange where the skin is. We started by cutting from where the white parts of the orange were and went down. Once we were finishing cutting our orange we find the lines on the side where the orange pieces are and cut them out one by one. Then we cut our orange pieces in half.

Cutting a kiwi: To cut a kiwi we cut both of the ends of the kiwi, we then lay it up flat.  Then you cut the sides of the kiwi where the skin is going down. After removing the skin off the kiwi you cut the kiwi in pieces. You first cut the kiwi in half then cut those halves into half creating quaters. Then you cut them in half again making smaller pieces.

After preparing our fruits we used our measuring spoons and cups to get one cup of yoghurt. Then we started on creating our fruit jars. We were customizing our cups with the fruits and yoghurt. We first added the fruot of our choice and then added a layer of yoghurt on top before adding another fruit. Each layer of fruit added we added a layer of yoghurt.

Then when we were finish with our fruit jars we cleaned our area with spray and wipe. Then we were ready to eat.

Ancestors Poem | Writing

LI: To write a poem to describe ancestors by using the literary devices of alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphor, simile and rhyme.

This week the students of LS2 have created poems using literary devices as in figurative language and more. The poem we wrote was based on our ancestors and our culture. I am a tongan female. My poem shares my identity and my taonga in the sentences written. Writing this poem really connected me to my family history and my ancestors. Being a tongan female, I have linked myself with my family village and my culture. I am proud of my heritage.

Steps | Suffixes

LI: To practice using suffixes.

Today I have completed a session of steps. For this session Mrs Anderson has set out an activity for us to do. For this activity we were learning/practising how to use suffixes. We had to click on the word that was used in a sentence.

Maths Challenge | Ta'ovala

LI: To find the most effecient strategy to solve this problem.

Today for maths, Sakshi and I have created a DLO showing our strategy solving a maths equation on Ta'ovala. To solve this problem we used multiplication and division. First we divided 12 by 8 to find the measurement of 1 Ta’ovala. Then we multiply 1.5 by 26 to get our final answer. Sakshi did the calculations while I did the strategy.

Maths Challenge

LI: To find the most effecient strategy to solve this problem.

Today for maths I have completed another challenge. On this DLO it shows 4 questions and my strategy. I worked with Sulia to complete this. We included the main information to show what was the vital things we needed to know for the question. This maths challenge was based on the sea and the fish. For the questions we had to use a rule to solve them. The rule was times the number of hours x3 and then -1, or you could add 3+3+3+3 until you get the answer then -1.

For this maths challenge the problem was based on a boy name Hemi who was preparing a hangi for a fundraiser for a kapa haka group. They were trying to figure out how many food items would fit in the hangi. On the last 3 slides I have explained my strategy and showcased my problem solving. I had a use of multiplication and addition to solve the questions.

Daily Maths Challenge 1

LI: To find the most efficient maths strategy to help you solve this maths problem.

This week I have completed a daily maths challenge. This was the first challenge. For this challenge the problem was based on a Women named Whaea Marama, she was the organiser for the kai at a hui. Each person had to have 7 slices of bread, we had to find out how many loaves of bread Whaea Marama would need for 267 people. I have recorded my strategy and problem solving on the last slide.

Literary Devices | Poetry

LI: to identify and understand literary devices (language features) used in poetry.

Today I have completed another task for this week. For this task we had to identify and understand different language features (figurative language) that are needed in a poem. Then we had to make our own examples of them. Here are examples of language features needed in a poem:
simile - A simile is a device where a poet likens a person or thing to something else to create a more vivid impression.  A simile always contains the word ‘as’ or ‘like’.
metaphor - When using a metaphor, a poet says one thing is the other thing.
hyperbole - An unrealistic exaggeration used for emphasis. It is not meant to be taken literally.
personification - When you liken an object to a person or giving the object a personality.  It is a way of speaking about inanimate objects as though they were people.
repitition -  When a word, sentence or phrase is written more than once in a poem
alliteration - Alliteration is the use of words which start with the same sound to create an effect.
onomatopoeia - The use of words that have the same sound as the thing or action being described, or which gives a feeling of that particular thing or action.

Daily Maths Challenge 2 | Harvesting Mussels

LI: To create a DLO showing you working out 3 questions and the strategy you used.

Today I have completed the 2nd daily maths challenge. For this maths challenge the theme was on harvesting mussels. Like the first daily maths challenge there are 3 questions I had put out for me to answer. For those 3 questions I used division (÷), multiplication (x), addition (+), and subtraction (-) to find the answers. I worked independantly to complete this. On the DLO above I explained my strategies.

Haiku Challenge 2 | Poetry

LI: To write your own 3 verse story in haiku version about one of the following topics:  rain, mountains, trees, ocean, summer, winter, and sun.

Today I have completed the second Haiku challenge. Instead of creating one haiku of one topic, I created a 3 verse story haiku of one topic. The topic I chose was rain. This was a diffucult but fun challenge, the difficult part in this is that I couldn't find the words to describe rain. In the DLO above you can see my story about rain. Background story of the haiku was about a girl walking to school and its raining.

Daily Maths Challenge 1 | Kahoa Lole

LI: To create a DLO showing you working out 3 questions and the strategy you used.

Today I have completed a daily maths challenge. For this maths challenge the theme was about Nana making Kahoa Lole's (lolly necklaces). There were 3 questions I had to answer. They were all the same question but different equation. I also had to show my strategy I used. On the last slide of the DLO I created a brief description on the strategy I used and how I used it. I worked independantly on this activity.

Liletina and I have worked together and finished it together so we can understand how to say Maori weather words.

Haiku | Challenge 1

LI: To create your own Haiky poem usng the following topics: rain, mountains, trees, ocean, summer, winter, and sun.

Today I have completed another poetry challenge. I worked independantly for this challenge. For this challenge I created 3 of my own haiku poems. The topics I chose was Rain, Summer and Winter. A haiku poem is a tradition Japanese poem that consists 17 syllables and 3 lines. The first line includes 5 syllables, the second line includes 7 syllables and the third line includes 5 syllables again. To help me understand how to create a haiku I used my past knowledge in creating a haiku. In the DLO below it shows my haiku poems I have created.

Extra Research | What is a Haiku Poem?

LI: to create a DLO about what a haiku poem is.

Today Liletina and I completed one of the weekly tasks set out for us. For this task we created a DLO about what a haiku poem is. A haiku poem is a traditional Japanese poem, it consists a count of 17 syllables. The first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables and the third line is 5 syllables again. Using our smart researching skills we found out that haiku in Japanese is spelt like this
俳句" . Haiku poems weren't always called haiku, the previous name was hokku. Me and Liletina worked together fantastically.
